Global positioning system, or GPS, units have quickly become a fixture in travel, whether it's on foot, by car, even by boat. You can use satellite navigation to find your way to almost everything, whether it's the nearest gas station or a fishing hotspot known only by its coordinates. You can make travel and navigation much easier on yourself if you know the right ways to use and make the most of your GPS unit.
Step 1
Turn on your GPS and allow it to locate itself. It will do this using satellites, which may take a minute or two, depending on your GPS's accessibility to the satellite signals. If you are in a car, make sure the GPS unit is on the dashboard to give it a clear shot at the satellite signals.
Step 2
Select your travel method, if your GPS provides the option. Some units offer different modes depending on whether you are in a car or on foot.
Step 3
Enter your target destination. You can go by coordinates, or if you have maps installed on your GPS, you can enter a street address. When you are finished, hit "Done" and let your GPS search for the location. If the destination you have typed in returns more than one result, you will have to choose one before proceeding.
Step 4
If you are traveling to a destination you plan to use numerous times, you can save the destination into your GPS and recall it without having to re-enter the coordinates or address.
Step 5
Follow the voice commands, if your GPS provides them. Otherwise, keep an eye on the distance you need to travel before your next change in direction. If you make a wrong turn or miss one, allow your GPS to recalculate your course and select a new one.
